Dick Gregory

Dick Gregory (1932–2017) was an American comedian, civil rights activist, social critic, and author. Rising to national prominence as a stand-up performer, he used comedy to confront racism and social injustice and became a prominent voice in the civil rights movement. Gregory was also known for political activism and public speaking, addressing issues including segregation, poverty, and war. He wrote and co-wrote books that blended autobiography and commentary, including *Nigger* (with Robert Lipsyte) and *Dick Gregory’s Political Primer*. Over decades in public life, Gregory remained a provocative figure whose work linked humor with protest and advocacy.
