Doris Lessing

Doris Lessing (1919–2013) was a British-Zimbabwean novelist and short-story writer. Born in Kermanshah, Persia (now Iran), she grew up in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and moved to London in 1949. Her debut novel, *The Grass Is Singing* (1950), drew on her experiences in Africa. Lessing became internationally known for *The Golden Notebook* (1962) and the *Children of Violence* series (1952–1969). Her wide-ranging work also includes the science-fiction sequence *Canopus in Argos: Archives* (1979–1983). In 2007 she received the Nobel Prize in Literature.
