Dorothy Canfield Fisher
Dorothy Canfield Fisher (1879–1958) was an American novelist, educator, and social reformer closely associated with Vermont. Born in Lawrence, Kansas, she studied at Ohio State University and earned a doctorate at Columbia University. Fisher wrote popular fiction and children’s books, including the novel *The Home-Maker* (1924), noted for its progressive view of family roles. She also worked to advance educational and civic causes, supporting adult education and prison reform. A longtime advocate of Maria Montessori’s methods, she helped introduce Montessori ideas to American readers through writing and public speaking. Fisher served on the Book-of-the-Month Club’s selection board.
