Douglas Horton

Douglas Horton (1891–1968) was an American Congregational minister and theologian. He served for many years as dean of Harvard Divinity School, where he helped shape theological education in the mid-twentieth century. Horton wrote widely on themes associated with liberal Protestantism, emphasizing the ethical and social responsibilities of Christian faith, and he supported ecumenical cooperation among churches. Through his preaching, teaching, and publications, he sought to relate Christian tradition to modern intellectual life and public concerns. Remembered as a significant voice in American Protestant thought, Horton combined academic leadership with a commitment to dialogue across denominational lines.
