Douglas William Jerrold

Douglas William Jerrold (1803–1857) was an English dramatist, journalist, and humorist. Born in London, he went to sea as a boy and later turned to writing for the stage and press. He achieved wide popularity with the nautical melodrama *Black-Eyed Susan* (1829), a major success in nineteenth-century theatre. Jerrold became a prominent contributor to *Punch* magazine from its early years, noted for sharp satire, political commentary, and witty social observation. He also wrote numerous plays, essays, and sketches, helping shape the tone of Victorian comic journalism. Jerrold died in London in 1857.
