E. P. Powell

Edward Payson Powell (1833–1915) was an American Episcopal clergyman, historian, and author. He served as a parish priest in New York State and became known for writing on regional history, especially the Hudson Valley and the state’s colonial and early national periods. Powell produced historical studies and biographical works that drew on local records and aimed to make New York’s past accessible to general readers. His books and essays reflect the interests of a nineteenth-century churchman-scholar: civic memory, moral reflection, and the shaping of community identity through narrative history. He remained active as a writer into the early twentieth century.
