Ed Gardner

Edward “Ed” Gardner (1901–1963) was an American radio writer and producer best known as the creator and principal writer of the long-running comedy series *Duffy’s Tavern*. He developed the show from an earlier radio concept and shaped its signature format: a fast-paced exchange of wisecracks and misunderstandings centered on Archie, the tavern’s harried manager, and a parade of eccentric callers and customers. Gardner also voiced Archie on the program, helping define its comic rhythm and catchphrases. A major hit during radio’s golden age, *Duffy’s Tavern* later expanded into film and other media, cementing Gardner’s place in American broadcast comedy.
