Eden Phillpotts

Eden Phillpotts (1862–1960) was an English novelist, poet, and playwright, best known for fiction rooted in the landscape and communities of Dartmoor. Born in India and raised in England, he became a prolific author whose output included novels, short stories, poetry, and stage works. His Dartmoor settings and regional detail helped define his popular reputation, and he also wrote in other genres, including mystery. Phillpotts is credited with originating the story that Alfred Hitchcock adapted for the 1934 film *The Man Who Knew Too Much*. He later lived in Devon and remained closely associated with the West Country in both life and work.
