Edward Moore

Edward Moore (1712–1757) was an English poet and dramatist noted for helping shape mid‑18th‑century sentimental drama. He is best known for the tragedy *The Gamester* (1753), a domestic play that treats gambling addiction and its moral consequences. Moore also wrote verse and a popular series of fables, later collected as *Fables for the Female Sex* (1744), which use concise narratives to offer ethical reflections. He contributed to periodical writing and moved in London’s literary circles. Moore’s work is marked by clear moral purpose and an emphasis on everyday characters rather than heroic subjects.
