El Amir Abdelkader
Emir Abdelkader (ʿAbd al-Qādir al-Jazāʾirī; 1808–1883) was an Algerian religious leader, military commander, and writer. Born near Mascara, he emerged in the 1830s as the principal organizer of resistance to the French conquest of Algeria, building a state structure and leading campaigns for more than a decade. He surrendered in 1847 and was imprisoned in France before being released and allowed to settle in the Ottoman Empire, living in Bursa and later Damascus. A Sufi associated with the Qadiriyya tradition, he authored influential religious and philosophical works and is remembered for protecting Christians during the 1860 violence in Damascus.
