Elbert Hubbard
Elbert Hubbard (1856–1915) was an American writer, publisher, and lecturer associated with the Arts and Crafts movement. He founded the Roycroft artisan community in East Aurora, New York, which produced books, furniture, and other handcrafted goods. Hubbard wrote essays and social commentary and became widely known for “A Message to Garcia” (1899), a short work praising initiative and personal responsibility that was reprinted and circulated extensively. He also published the magazine *The Philistine* and issued finely made volumes through the Roycroft Press. Hubbard died in 1915 when the ocean liner *RMS Lusitania* was sunk during World War I.
