Elie Wiesel

Elie Wiesel (1928–2016) was a Romanian-born Jewish writer, Holocaust survivor, and human rights advocate. Deported as a teenager from Sighet to Auschwitz and later Buchenwald, he survived the Nazi camps while much of his family was murdered. After the war he became a journalist and author, writing in French and later widely translated. His best-known book, the memoir *Night* (1958), recounts his experiences during the Holocaust and has become a foundational work of Holocaust literature. Wiesel taught at Boston University and spoke internationally against indifference and persecution. He received the 1986 Nobel Peace Prize.
