Ellen Burstyn

Edna Rae Gillooly, better known by her professional name, Ellen Burstyn, was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1932. After dropping out of high school, Burstyn started modeling and eventually moved to New York and began acting. In 1957, Burstyn debuted on Broadway and acted in numerous plays. In the 1960s, she appeared in various TV shows, including the soap opera The Doctors. Burstyn won a Tony Award for her performance in the play Same Time, Next Year in 1975. In the 1970s, Burstyn appeared in a number of films, winning an Oscar in 1974 for her performance in the Martin Scorsese film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Burstyn continues to act in television and films.
