Ellen Glasgow

Ellen Glasgow (1873–1945) was an American novelist and short story writer from Richmond, Virginia. Associated with Southern realism, she wrote fiction that examined social change, class, and the constraints placed on women in the post–Civil War South. Her novels include *Virginia* (1913), *Barren Ground* (1925), and *Vein of Iron* (1935). Glasgow received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for *In This Our Life* (1941). She was also known for her critical perspective on romanticized “Old South” traditions and for her place in the Virginia literary scene. Glasgow’s memoir, *The Woman Within* (published posthumously in 1954), offers further insight into her life and work.
