Emily Carr
Emily Carr (1871–1945) was a Canadian painter and writer from Victoria, British Columbia. A leading figure in Canadian modernism, she is known for expressive landscapes of the Pacific Northwest and for paintings of Indigenous village sites and totem poles, shaped by her travels in coastal British Columbia. Carr studied art in San Francisco and in England and France, and later gained wider recognition after connecting with artists and patrons in central Canada. She also wrote acclaimed books drawn from her experiences, including *Klee Wyck* (winner of the 1941 Governor General’s Award) and *The Book of Small*. Her work remains central to Canadian art and literature.
