Emma Goldman
Emma Goldman (1869–1940) was a Lithuanian-born American anarchist political activist, writer, and lecturer. Born in Kaunas, then in the Russian Empire, she emigrated to the United States in 1885 and became a prominent voice in radical politics. Goldman advocated anarchism, women’s emancipation, birth control, free speech, and labor rights, and she lectured widely across the country. She co-founded the anarchist journal *Mother Earth* in 1906 and was repeatedly arrested for her activism. During World War I she opposed conscription, leading to imprisonment and deportation in 1919. She later lived in Europe and Canada, and died in Toronto.
