Epitaph of Winifred Holtby
“Epitaph of Winifred Holtby” is not a person but a memorial text associated with Winifred Holtby (1898–1935), an English novelist, journalist, and social commentator. Holtby was born in Rudston, Yorkshire, and studied at Somerville College, Oxford. She wrote fiction and non-fiction and became known for her advocacy of women’s rights and social reform, as well as for her journalism. Holtby’s best-known novel, *South Riding* (published posthumously in 1936), draws on Yorkshire life and local politics. She was a close friend of writer Vera Brittain and collaborated with her on public writing. Holtby died in London aged 37.
