Ernest Taylor “Ernie” Pyle (1900–1945) was an American journalist best known as a war correspondent whose writing focused on the daily lives of ordinary soldiers. Born in Dana, Indiana, he worked as a reporter and later became a widely read columnist. During World War II he reported from multiple theaters of war, gaining a reputation for clear, empathetic dispatches from the front. In 1944 he received the Pulitzer Prize for Correspondence. Pyle was killed in 1945 while covering the Battle of Okinawa. His work remains associated with humane, ground-level reporting that brought the experiences of servicemen to readers at home.
