Eve Merriam

Eve Merriam (1916–1992) was an American poet and children’s author whose work is noted for clarity, humor, and an inviting speaking voice. Born in Philadelphia, she studied at the University of Pennsylvania and later earned a master’s degree from Columbia University. Merriam wrote poetry for adults as well as widely read books for young readers, including verse that plays with sound, rhythm, and everyday language. She also produced educational writing and anthologies that helped introduce poetry to classrooms. Her children’s titles include *It Doesn’t Always Have to Rhyme* and *Mommies at Work*. Merriam lived and worked in New York City.
