François de La Rochefoucauld
François VI, Duc de La Rochefoucauld, Prince de Marcillac, was born into a noble French family in 1613. He received a nobleman’s education of military exercises, court etiquette, and hunting, and was married to the future marquise de Rambouillet at 15. He then joined the army, earning a name for himself by fighting bravely in many military campaigns. Besides serving in the French army and French court, La Rochefoucauld also authored many maxims as well as his memoirs, and it is for his writing that La Rochefoucauld ultimately became best known. La Rochefoucauld died of gout in 1880, at age 62.
