Frank McCourt

Frank McCourt (1930–2009) was an Irish-American memoirist and educator best known for *Angela’s Ashes* (1996), his account of a difficult childhood in Limerick, Ireland. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he spent part of his early life in Ireland before returning to the United States as a teenager. McCourt served in the U.S. Army and later earned degrees from New York University and Brooklyn College. He taught English and writing for decades in New York City public schools and at Stuyvesant High School. *Angela’s Ashes* won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography. He later published *’Tis* and *Teacher Man*.
