Frederick Reines

Frederick Reines (1918–1998) was an American physicist whose work helped establish neutrinos as real particles. Born in Paterson, New Jersey, he earned his PhD at New York University and worked at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, where he contributed to nuclear research. With Clyde L. Cowan Jr., Reines designed and carried out the first successful detection of the neutrino, reported in 1956, using antineutrinos from a nuclear reactor. He later held academic posts, including at Case Institute of Technology and the University of California, Irvine, where he served as a founding faculty member. Reines received the 1995 Nobel Prize in Physics for the neutrino discovery.
