Frederick Saunders

Frederick Saunders (1820–1906) was an English-born American writer and educator active in New York’s literary circles. After emigrating to the United States, he became known for compiling and editing literary and devotional selections, producing books aimed at general readers as well as students. Among his best-known titles are *Salad for the Solitary* and *Evenings with the Sacred Poets*, works that gather excerpts and reflections from a range of authors and traditions. Saunders’s career combined teaching with authorship, and his publications reflect a nineteenth-century taste for anthologies, moral reading, and accessible literary culture.
