Gabriel García Márquez

Gabriel García Márquez (1927–2014) was a Colombian novelist and journalist whose work helped define magical realism in modern literature. Born in Aracataca, Colombia, he began his career in journalism before gaining international acclaim as a fiction writer. His landmark novel *One Hundred Years of Solitude* (1967) chronicles the rise and fall of the Buendía family in the mythical town of Macondo and became one of the most influential Spanish-language novels of the 20th century. He later published *Love in the Time of Cholera* (1985). In 1982, García Márquez received the Nobel Prize in Literature.
