Gary Hart

Gary Hart (born 1936) is an American politician and author. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as a United States Senator from Colorado from 1975 to 1987. Hart sought the Democratic nomination for president in 1984 and again in 1988. In the 1984 race he emerged as a leading contender, winning several primaries and caucuses, but ultimately lost the nomination to Walter Mondale. He entered the 1988 contest as a prominent candidate but withdrew from the race in 1987. After leaving the Senate, he continued public work and writing, including books on politics and national security.
