George Bancroft
George Bancroft (1800–1891) was an American historian and public official. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, he studied at Harvard College and later in Germany. Bancroft became best known for his ambitious multi-volume *History of the United States*, a landmark 19th-century narrative of the nation’s origins and political development. He also pursued a career in government and diplomacy: he served as U.S. Secretary of the Navy under President James K. Polk, and later represented the United States abroad as minister to the United Kingdom. Bancroft’s writing helped shape popular understanding of early American history for generations.
