George Croly

George Croly (1780–1860) was an Irish Anglican priest, novelist, poet, and historian. Educated at Trinity College Dublin, he was ordained in the Church of Ireland and later became a prominent preacher and writer in London. Croly produced a wide range of works, including sermons, historical writing, poetry, and fiction. He is best known for the novel *Salathiel* (1828), a tale of the Wandering Jew, and for the poem “The Angel of the World.” His writing often blended religious themes with romantic and historical interests. Croly served as rector of St Stephen Walbrook in the City of London.
