George J. Mitchell
George J. Mitchell (George John Mitchell Jr., born 1933) is an American politician and diplomat. A member of the Democratic Party, he represented Maine in the United States Senate from 1980 to 1995 and served as Senate Majority Leader from 1989 to 1995. After leaving the Senate, Mitchell became widely known for his role in the Northern Ireland peace process: he chaired the multiparty talks that helped lead to the 1998 Good Friday Agreement. He later served as U.S. Special Envoy for Middle East Peace (2009–2011). Mitchell has also held prominent roles in higher education and public service, including as chancellor of Queen’s University Belfast.
