George Lamming

George Lamming (1927–2022) was a Barbadian novelist, essayist, and postcolonial intellectual whose writing helped shape Caribbean literature in the mid‑twentieth century. Born in Carrington Village, Barbados, he moved to Britain in 1950, joining a generation of West Indian writers who chronicled migration, colonialism, and cultural identity. His debut novel, *In the Castle of My Skin* (1953), drew on Barbadian village life and became his best‑known work. Lamming went on to publish influential fiction and criticism, including *The Emigrants* (1954) and *The Pleasures of Exile* (1960), and remained an important voice in debates on decolonization and Caribbean self‑definition.
