George Moore
George Moore (1852–1933) was an Irish novelist, short-story writer, poet, and art critic. Born at Moore Hall, County Mayo, he spent formative years in Paris, where he absorbed French realist and naturalist influences. Settling in London, he became known for fiction that challenged Victorian conventions, notably *A Mummer’s Wife* (1885) and *Esther Waters* (1894). Moore also wrote criticism and memoir, including *Confessions of a Young Man* (1888), and later returned to Ireland, engaging with the Irish Literary Revival while maintaining a cosmopolitan outlook. His story collection *The Untilled Field* (1903) helped shape modern Irish short fiction.
