George Orwell

Eric Arthur Blair, commonly known by his pen name George Orwell, was born in India, but moved to England with his mother as a baby. After attending school at Eaton College and Wellington College, Orwell moved to Burma and worked as a policeman. Orwell’s rich biography would also include fighting against the fascists in the Spanish Civil War. In the 1930s, Orwell started writing novels. He also wrote extensively on politics, culture, and language. Orwell’s novels Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949) and Animal Farm (1945) together have sold more copies than any other two books by a 20th-century author.
