Golda Meir

Golda Meir (born Golda Mabovitch) moved with her family from Kiev, Ukraine to Milwaukee, Wisconsin as a child. As a teen, Meir became active in the socialist Zionist movement. Meir taught at Milwaukee public schools upon graduating college. After marrying, Meir moved with her husband to Palestine and settled in Jerusalem. Meir became active in politics and was eventually elected to Minister of Labor and then Foreign Minister of Israel. Upon Prime Minister Levi Eshkol’s death, Meir was elected as his successor, becoming the first female Prime Minister of Israel. As Prime Minister, Meir is known for encouraging the immigration of Soviet Jews to Israel and strengthening U.S.-Israeli relations.
