Grazia Deledda

Grazia Deledda (1871–1936) was an Italian novelist born in Nuoro, Sardinia. Largely self-educated, she began publishing fiction while still young and went on to write novels, short stories, and plays. Her work often draws on Sardinian life, portraying local customs, social constraints, and moral conflict with psychological realism. Deledda moved to Rome after marrying Palmiro Madesani in 1900, and her literary reputation grew nationally and abroad. In 1926 she received the Nobel Prize in Literature, cited for writings inspired by her native island and for their depth and clarity. She died in Rome in 1936.
