Hamilton Wright Mabie

Hamilton Wright Mabie (1846–1916) was an American essayist, editor, and literary critic. Born in Cold Spring, New York, he became a prominent voice on books, education, and culture in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century America. Mabie wrote widely for magazines and newspapers and was closely associated with *The Outlook*, where he served as an editor and helped shape its literary coverage. He also lectured and published collections of essays that introduced general readers to authors and ideas, emphasizing moral insight and the pleasures of reading. His work made him a familiar guide to literature for a broad audience.
