Hannah Senesh

Hannah Senesh (also spelled Hannah Szenes; 1921–1944) was a Hungarian-born Jewish poet and Zionist activist. Born in Budapest, she emigrated to Mandatory Palestine in 1939 and studied at the Nahalal Agricultural School. During World War II she volunteered for the British Army and was among the Jewish parachutists trained to assist Allied operations and help rescue Jews in Nazi-occupied Europe. In 1944 she parachuted into Yugoslavia and later crossed into Hungary, where she was arrested by Hungarian authorities. She was tried for treason and executed by firing squad in Budapest in November 1944.
