Harry Emerson Fosdick

Harry Emerson Fosdick (1878–1969) was an American Baptist minister and a leading voice in liberal Protestant theology. Ordained in 1903, he served as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in New York City (1918–1925), where his modernist preaching drew national attention during the fundamentalist–modernist controversy. He later became the founding pastor of Riverside Church in New York City, serving from 1930 to 1946. Fosdick was also a professor of practical theology at Union Theological Seminary and a widely read author of sermons and devotional works, including *The Manhood of the Master* (1913) and *On Being a Real Person* (1943).
