Henry Alford
Henry Alford (1810–1871) was an English churchman, scholar, and author. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, he became a prominent Anglican clergyman and biblical commentator. Alford is best known as editor of *The Greek Testament*, a major nineteenth-century critical edition and commentary on the New Testament in Greek, valued for its engagement with textual criticism and interpretation. He also wrote widely, including sermons, essays, and devotional works, and contributed to hymnody. In 1857 he was appointed Dean of Canterbury, a post he held until his death. Alford’s scholarship helped shape Victorian-era New Testament studies in the English-speaking world.
