Henry John Temple (Viscount Palmerston)

Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston (1784–1865), was a British statesman who served twice as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (1855–1858; 1859–1865). He entered Parliament in 1807 and held senior office for decades, notably as Secretary at War (1809–1828), Foreign Secretary (1830–1834; 1835–1841; 1846–1851), and Home Secretary (1852–1855). A leading figure in the Whig and later Liberal governments, Palmerston was closely associated with an assertive foreign policy during a period of European upheaval. He remained Prime Minister until his death in office in 1865.
