Henry Maudsley

Henry Maudsley (1835–1918) was an English psychiatrist and medical writer who became a prominent figure in Victorian mental medicine. Trained in medicine in London, he rose quickly in asylum practice and later worked as a consultant and influential commentator on psychiatric theory and public policy. Maudsley wrote widely on mental illness, heredity, and the relationship between mind and body, helping to shape professional debate in the late nineteenth century. His name is commemorated in the Maudsley Hospital in London, founded through a bequest associated with him. He also served as editor of the *Journal of Mental Science*, a leading psychiatric periodical of his day.
