Henry Moore

Henry Moore (1898–1986) was an English sculptor and artist, widely regarded as one of the leading figures of 20th-century British sculpture. Born in Castleford, Yorkshire, he studied at the Leeds School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London. Moore became best known for monumental, semi-abstract sculptures—often in bronze—featuring reclining figures and other organic forms. During the Second World War he gained public attention for his “Shelter Drawings,” depicting Londoners in the Underground during the Blitz. After the war his international reputation grew through major commissions and exhibitions. He later established the Henry Moore Foundation to support the arts.
