Henry Van Dyke

Henry Van Dyke Sr. (1852–1933) was an American author, poet, and Presbyterian clergyman. Born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, he was educated at Princeton University and later taught there as a professor of English literature. Van Dyke wrote widely read essays, poems, and stories, including the short story “The Other Wise Man” and the hymn “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee.” He also served in public life as a U.S. diplomat, appointed minister to the Netherlands and Luxembourg during the administration of President Woodrow Wilson. Remembered for his accessible style and moral vision, he bridged literature, education, and faith.
