Herbert Hoover

Herbert Hoover (1874–1964) was an American engineer, humanitarian, and the 31st President of the United States. Born in West Branch, Iowa, he studied geology at Stanford University and built an international career in mining engineering and management. During World War I he led major relief efforts, including the Commission for Relief in Belgium, and later headed the U.S. Food Administration. Hoover served as U.S. Secretary of Commerce in the 1920s before winning the presidency in 1928; his term was dominated by the onset of the Great Depression. After leaving office, he wrote extensively, including memoirs and political works.
