Horace
The Roman poet Horace was born in 65 BC in the south of Italy. His father accompanied him to Rome to oversee his education, and at 19, Horace traveled to Athens to enroll in The Academy, founded by Plato. Horace started writing poetry, distinguished by its elegant hexameter and iambic verses. Horace’s career coincided with the change of power in the Roman Empire and he also became a spokesman for the new regime. Horace’s Odes were the best received of his poems in ancient times; some of his other works included Ars Poetica, Satires 1 and 2, Epistles 1 and 2, Epodes, and Carmen Saeculare.
