Irving Berlin

Irving Berlin (1888–1989) was a Russian-born American composer and lyricist who became one of the most influential figures in American popular song. Raised in New York City after immigrating as a child, he rose from Tin Pan Alley to Broadway and Hollywood, writing hundreds of songs noted for directness, wit, and memorable melodies. Berlin’s best-known works include “White Christmas,” “God Bless America,” “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” and “There’s No Business Like Show Business.” He composed scores for stage and film, including *Annie Get Your Gun*. Over a career spanning decades, Berlin helped define the sound of 20th-century American music.
