J. D. Salinger
Jerome David Salinger (1919–2010) was an American writer best known for his novel *The Catcher in the Rye* (1951), a landmark coming-of-age story featuring Holden Caulfield. Born in New York City, he published short fiction in the 1940s and later collected several stories in *Nine Stories* (1953). His other major books include *Franny and Zooey* (1961), *Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction* (1963), and *Hapworth 16, 1924* (1965). After the mid-1960s he largely withdrew from public life, becoming noted for his privacy and limited publishing.
