Jack Dempsey

Jack Dempsey (1895–1983) was an American professional boxer and world heavyweight champion, nicknamed the “Manassa Mauler.” Born in Manassa, Colorado, he rose from a difficult early life to become one of the sport’s defining figures of the 1920s. Dempsey won the heavyweight title in 1919 by defeating Jess Willard and held it until 1926, when he lost to Gene Tunney. Their rivalry continued with a 1927 rematch remembered for the “long count” controversy. Known for aggressive, crowd-pleasing fighting, Dempsey became a major celebrity and helped popularize boxing in the United States. He later remained a prominent public figure.
