James Beard
James Beard (1903–1985) was an American chef, cookbook author, and television personality who helped popularize American cooking. Born in Portland, Oregon, he trained in voice and theater before turning to food professionally. Beard wrote influential cookbooks, including *American Cookery* (1972), and became a familiar presence through early food broadcasting, notably the television series *I Love to Eat* (1946–1947). He also taught cooking and advocated for fresh, seasonal ingredients and regional traditions. After his death, the James Beard Foundation was established in his name and now administers the annual James Beard Awards, among the most prominent honors in U.S. food culture.
