James Bryce
James Bryce, 1st Viscount Bryce (1838–1922), was a British jurist, historian, and Liberal politician. Educated at the University of Glasgow and the University of Oxford, he became Regius Professor of Civil Law at Oxford and later served as a Member of Parliament. Bryce held office as Chief Secretary for Ireland and as President of the Board of Trade. He is best known as the author of *The American Commonwealth* (1888), a major study of United States government and society. From 1907 to 1913 he served as the United Kingdom’s ambassador to the United States, strengthening Anglo-American relations.
