James Freeman Clarke

James Freeman Clarke (1810–1888) was an American Unitarian minister, theologian, abolitionist, and author. Born in Hanover, New Hampshire, he became a leading liberal religious voice in nineteenth-century Boston. Clarke served as pastor of the Church of the Disciples and helped found the Radical Club, a forum for progressive religious and philosophical discussion. Active in antislavery circles, he supported abolitionist causes and wrote widely on ethics, faith, and social reform. His best-known book, *Ten Great Religions*, compared major world faiths for a broad readership and reflected his interest in religious pluralism. Clarke also produced sermons, essays, and devotional writings.
