James Howell

James Howell (c. 1594–1666) was a Welsh-born English historian, political writer, and author. He is best known for *Epistolae Ho-Elianae* (*Familiar Letters*), an epistolary collection that helped secure his reputation as a lively observer of public affairs and private life. Howell wrote on politics and history during a turbulent seventeenth century marked by civil conflict and shifting regimes.
